Top-level sports start with the basics: your feet
Deel
On Thursday, May 14, ZOL Solutions attended the BP College / Tulp Hoofdklasse Clinic. It was a wonderful morning where elite sports and health came together — and where we could show that literally every good performance has a foundation: your feet.
One pair for life
It sounds logical, but it's surprisingly often forgotten: you only have one pair of feet, and you have to make them last your entire life. No spares, no upgrade package. Yet, we often treat them as if they'll stay in top shape on their own. We cram them into shoes that look good instead of fitting well, we ignore signs of overuse, and we only take action when something really goes wrong.
That's a shame, because feet are the starting point of almost every movement. An incorrect position, an unbalanced load, or a shoe that doesn't fit your foot type affects your knees, hips, and back. A small problem at the bottom can lead to a big problem further up.
Elite sport is more than training on the field
The Tulp Hoofdklasse hockey players — and indeed every serious athlete — work hard on the field. But the meters you cover during a training session are only one part of the story. What you do around training determines whether you can handle that load year after year: sleep, nutrition, recovery, strength training, and not least, the way your body impacts the ground.
A player who runs hundreds of sprints a week in the wrong shoes or with an undetected foot deviation builds up injuries without realizing it. Physical health is not a minor detail alongside sports — it is the prerequisite for being able to continue playing the sport at all.
What we did during the clinic
During the clinic, we performed foot scans on the young athletes. It's not complicated: a quick measurement where we map out what someone's foot looks like, how it's loaded, and what position it has.
The athletes now know whether they have a neutral stance, high arches, or flat feet. This information is important when buying new (sports) shoes.
Finally
We would like to thank BP College and Tulp Hoofdklasse for the collaboration, and the young athletes and parents for their enthusiasm and interest. It was great to see how many questions arose as soon as the conversation turned to feet and shoes. A clear sign that this topic deserves much more attention than it receives.
Because whether you play hockey at the highest level or just want to stay fit: it all starts with the ground you stand on.
